Overlay a mineral skin without stripping the wall

Flexible stone cladding can overlay sound render or board. Confirm substrate, primer, and movement joints on the current data sheet before stripping the wall.

In brief

  1. Flexible stone can overlay an existing wall when the substrate is sound and the sheet is locked to the data sheet.
  2. Mass stays low enough that many renovations avoid a full strip-out — confirm on the current sheet.
  3. Primer, adhesive, and movement joints are specification items, not site improvisation.

Renovation often fails at the first assumption: that the old face must come off. If the substrate is sound, a mineral flexible stone sheet can sit as a new skin. The point is not speed for its own sake. It is to change the wall without rebuilding the building.

When overlay is the honest path

Overlay makes sense on interior feature walls, lift lobbies, and some facades where the existing render or cement board is bonded, dry, and within the movement the sheet can follow. It is the wrong path on a failing substrate, a soaking wall, or a system that needs a drained cavity the sheet cannot provide. Say that in the specification. Do not hide it in a brochure.

Because the sheet is thin and light relative to tile or thick stone, many projects keep the existing build-up. That is why specifiers ask about overlay and about insulation systems in the same conversation. The mill will not guess which of those you have. Name the wall.

What the site still has to get right

Primer, adhesive, and joint layout are not optional extras. They belong on the current data sheet and on the drawing. Movement joints in the building must reappear in the cladding. Corners, soffits, and penetrations need a cut plan. A ripple look hides a joint more easily than a large travertine pit; neither look forgives a hollow substrate.

Ask for a mill-run sample of the look, not a photograph of another job. Photographs of authorised projects are rare and we will not invent one. The sample plus the sheet is the evidence.

If the renovation is also a fire-rated wall or an exterior insulation system, lock those classes before colour. Then pick the look from the board — Ripple, Cement Panel, or Travertine are common overlay faces — and send the names with the inquiry.

See the look board, or request a sample and the current data sheet.
